Data-Free Betting in South Africa: Who Offers It and What It Covers
Hollywoodbets and Betway are widely reported to offer data-free betting (Vodacom and MTN, and for Betway also Cell C and Telkom), and Supabets calls its app "data-free". Of those, we could read only the Supabets claim on the operator\'s own pages, so the table below separates what is reported from what is confirmed.

For a proper data-free experience, start with Hollywoodbets or Betway. Both are reported to work on Vodacom and MTN, and Betway is also reported on Cell C and Telkom. Supabets says its app is data-free but does not say on which networks. We found no data-free offer on the home pages of WSB, Sunbet, Lottostar or YesPlay on 3 October 2026; YesPlay's site is simply very light. Download the app on Wi-Fi first: installing it is never free.
How does data-free betting work?
South African mobile networks can "zero-rate" a specific website or app for a partner: the partner pays the network, and traffic to that address does not count against your bundle or airtime balance. You still need a phone, a SIM and signal, and you usually need to reach the bookmaker through its data-free address or its app rather than a general link.
Zero-rating applies to the traffic of the bookmaker's own domain. Anything that leaves it, such as a bank's payment page, an app-store download, a video stream or a website you open from an advert, is normal traffic and uses data. That one rule explains most of the "it said data-free but I was charged" complaints.
Which bookmakers offer data-free betting?
The table separates three kinds of evidence. "Operator's own page" means we read it on the bookmaker's site on 3 October 2026. "Reported" means third-party sites say so but we could not read it from the operator, because that operator's site is blocked from where we research. "None found" means we looked and the operator's own home page does not mention it.
| Bookmaker | Data-free? | Networks | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hollywoodbets | Yes (reported) | Vodacom, MTN. Cell C and Telkom not confirmed | Third-party reports; same login as the normal site. Not read from the operator |
| Betway | Yes (reported) | MTN, Vodacom, Cell C, Telkom (reported) | Third-party reports; delivered through the normal app or site. Not read from the operator |
| Supabets | Claimed, unspecified | Not stated | Operator's own page: "data-free app" and "light data use" |
| YesPlay | Partial: a very light site, not zero-rated | N/A | No data-free mention on its own pages; our assessment of page weight |
| World Sports Betting | None found | N/A | No mention on its home page. One third-party site says it is zero-rated; not confirmed |
| Sunbet, Lottostar | None found | N/A | No mention on their home pages |
| EasyBet, Playa Bets, 10bet, Zarbet | Not verified | N/A | Their sites could not be read from where we research |
Checked 3 October 2026. Network coverage changes and is set between the bookmaker and the network, so confirm on your own SIM. If you are in South Africa and can read an operator's data-free page, tell us what it says and we will update this table.
How do I use the data-free version?
- Install the app on Wi-Fi first, from the bookmaker's own site or the App Store. See the mobile guides for Hollywoodbets, Betway and YesPlay.
- If the bookmaker has a data-free web address, find it from its own login page or footer. Do not use a link from an SMS, a WhatsApp forward or an advert.
- Log in as normal. The account, balance and login are the same as on the normal site.
- Test it once: note your data balance and airtime, open a market, and check both again before you rely on it.
- Do not start a deposit through a bank or payment page unless you know it is covered. A cash voucher (1Voucher, OTT or Blu) bought in advance keeps the deposit on the bookmaker's own site.
What still uses data on a data-free site?
- App downloads and updates, whether from an app store or from the bookmaker's own website.
- Live streaming and video, which data-free versions generally leave out.
- Payment and verification pages hosted by someone else, such as a bank, an instant-EFT provider or an ID-upload service.
- Links that leave the bookmaker's domain, including sponsor banners and external help articles.
- Any network the bookmaker has not zero-rated. Data-free on one SIM is not a promise for another.
Data-free site vs normal site vs app
| Data-free route | Normal browser | App | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data cost | R0 on supported networks | Full | Full, usually less than a browser |
| Live streaming | Generally no | Yes | Yes |
| Speed on a weak signal | Fastest | Slower | Medium |
| Install needed | Depends on the bookmaker | No | Yes, uses data once |
| Best for | Days with no data or airtime | Occasional bettors | Regular bettors |
No data-free option? How to bet on a small data budget
Most bookmakers have no data-free route, and that is fine if you plan around it. Buy your deposit voucher with cash at a shop rather than paying online, so the only data you spend is the bet itself. Use the mobile site on a light bookmaker such as YesPlay instead of a heavy app, turn off auto-playing video, and keep app updates for Wi-Fi. Our betting apps comparison shows which bookmakers publish an app and what each one needs.
A note on responsible gambling
Data-free access removes one friction that used to make people stop: running out of airtime. Set a deposit limit and a time limit before you start, and take a break if you notice you are chasing losses. FAQ
Does data-free betting cost anything at all?
Not when you are on a supported network and using the data-free route: browsing and betting there should not touch your data bundle or airtime. You still need a working SIM and signal, and anything that leaves the data-free domain, such as downloading an app or opening a bank page, can still use data.
Which networks does Hollywoodbets data-free work on?
Third-party sources report Vodacom and MTN. We could not read this from Hollywoodbets itself (its site is blocked from where we research), and we found no source for Cell C or Telkom, so we do not list them. Confirm on your own network before relying on it.
Does Betway have a data-free version?
Third-party sources report that MTN, Vodacom, Cell C and Telkom users can use Betway without data being deducted, with a banner in the app saying you are in data-free mode. We could not read Betway's own pages, so treat the network list as reported, not confirmed.
Is Supabets data-free?
Supabets' own download page says "Download our data-free app" and lists "light data use", but it does not say which networks or what is covered. We list it as unconfirmed until that is clear.
Can I deposit and withdraw on a data-free site?
Account functions are reported to work, but a deposit that hands you over to a bank or payment page may leave the data-free domain and use data. Buying a voucher with cash and entering the PIN keeps you on the bookmaker's own site; see the voucher guides before you rely on it.
Can I download the app without data?
No. Downloading or updating an app, whether from an app store or a bookmaker's website, uses normal data. Data-free applies to using the site or app once it is installed.
How do I know I am really in data-free mode?
Check your data balance and airtime, make one small action such as opening a market, and check again. Some apps show a banner when data-free is active, but your own balance is the only proof that matters.
Does data-free betting make it easier to gamble too much?
It can, because there is no data or airtime cost to slow you down. Set a deposit limit and a time limit before you start. Free, confidential help is available on the National Responsible Gambling Programme line, 0800 006 008.
