How to Deposit Cash into an Online Betting Account
You have notes in your hand and an online betting account. South Africa gives you three genuine routes between the two, and one of them is a proper counter with a human and a receipt.

The three routes
| Route | Speed | Cost | Limit | Works with |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Retail voucher (buy a PIN with cash) | Instant | Free | R1,000–R4,000 per slip | Every bookmaker we review |
| Bookmaker branch counter | Instant | Free | High — ask at the branch | Retail bookmakers only |
| Cash deposit at your bank, then EFT | Same day to 2 days | Bank cash-deposit fees apply | Your account limits | Every bookmaker |
For most people, most of the time, the answer is the first one. The second is better for large amounts. The third is the worst of the three — banks charge real money to take cash over a counter — and is only worth it if you were going to bank the cash anyway.
Route 1: buy a voucher with cash
This is the standard South African method and it is free, instant and available within walking distance of almost anywhere.
- Go to any supermarket till, petrol kiosk, spaza with a Flash terminal, or Kazang agent.
- Ask for a 1Voucher (or OTT) and state the rand amount.
- Pay cash. Take the printed slip and check the PIN is fully legible.
- Log in, Deposit, Voucher, enter the PIN. Credited in seconds.
Sellers include Pick n Pay, Boxer, Shoprite, Checkers, USave, most petrol forecourts, and the informal terminal networks. There is no fee: R200 of cash buys a R200 voucher.
Route 2: the branch counter
Some South African bookmakers are retail businesses that later moved online, not online businesses that never had a shop. Where that is true, you can walk in with cash and have it loaded straight onto the same account you bet with on your phone.
| Bookmaker | Cash at a branch | Speed | Fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hollywoodbets † | Yes — nationwide retail branches | Instant | Free |
| Supabets | Yes — retail branches | Instant | Free |
| Betway † | No — online only | — | — |
| YesPlay | No — online only | — | — |
| Playa Bets † | No — online only | — | — |
- Checked directly against the operator’s own published help pages: YesPlay and Supabets.
- Provisional (†): Hollywoodbets, Betway and Playa Bets serve their help pages only to South African visitors behind bot protection, so we could not re-read them on this pass. Those figures come from our earlier research and may have moved. Treat them as a starting point and confirm on the operator’s deposit screen.
Take your ID. The counter will link the deposit to your online account, and because the branch can see your FICA status, this is also the easiest place to sort out verification problems that would otherwise hold up a withdrawal later.
Route 3: bank the cash, then transfer
Deposit the notes into your own bank account at a branch or a cash-accepting ATM, then fund your betting account by Ozow instant EFT or standard EFT.
Be aware of what this costs. South African banks charge cash-handling fees on deposits — typically a percentage of the amount, sometimes with a minimum. On R500 that fee can easily exceed what you would pay for the same deposit made any other way, which is to say nothing at all. Use this route when you were going to bank the money regardless, not as a deposit method in its own right.
The withdrawal asymmetry — read this before you win
- The normal route is EFT into a bank account in your own name, after FICA verification. Never someone else’s account — that is a licence condition, not a preference.
- Two operators publish more: WSB lists Shoprite Money Market (cash at a supermarket till), Cash Send, Instant Money, eWallet and TymeBank; Supabets lists cardless OTP, eWallet and a 1ForYou voucher. See who pays out without a bank account.
- Branch counters at retail bookmakers may pay limited amounts in cash under their own licence conditions. Confirm the current limit at the branch rather than assuming it.
FAQ
Can I deposit cash into an online betting account in South Africa?
Yes, three ways: buy a prepaid voucher with cash and redeem the PIN online; pay cash over the counter at a bookmaker's retail branch, where one exists; or bank the cash and transfer by EFT. The first two are free and instant.
Which betting sites let me deposit cash at a branch?
Hollywoodbets and Supabets both operate retail branches where cash can be loaded directly onto your online account. Betway, YesPlay and Playa Bets are online only, so use a voucher instead.
Is there a fee to deposit cash?
Vouchers and branch counters are free. A R200 voucher costs R200. Only the bank route costs money, because South African banks charge cash-handling fees on over-the-counter deposits.
Can I get my winnings paid out in cash?
Sometimes. The standard route is EFT to a bank account in your own name after FICA verification. Supabets additionally publishes a cardless OTP option that lets you draw the money at an ATM without a card, plus eWallet and 1ForYou voucher payouts. Retail branches may also pay limited amounts over the counter under their own licence conditions, so confirm the current limit at the branch.
What is the maximum cash deposit?
Vouchers cap between R1,000 and R4,000 per slip depending on type, though you can redeem several. Branch counters handle much larger amounts, subject to the operator's own reporting thresholds.
